Jonah Jacobs

Cleveland's Most Exciting New Artist

"Beauty is something wonderful and strange that the artist fashions out of the chaos of the world in the torment of his soul. And when he has made it, it is not given to all to know it. To recognize it you must repeat the adventure of the artist." - W. Somerset Maugham

I am a self taught artist living in Lake county. I was born in Denmark but have lived in the United States for most of my life. I have a degree in philosophy from Antioch college and served four years in the Army (two and half of those years were spent in the 82nd Airborne division). I also write short stories, poems, and am currently working on a novel. I have spent the last seven years refining my technique and experimenting with new styles of art. My artwork consists of three different styles:

  1. Found objects (mostly paper with text) which are layered, distorted, cut up, and then pasted back together in order to create spontaneous and subconscious juxtapositions.
  2. Found objects pieced together in order to create sculpture-like collages which emphasize texture and the "organic" nature of art.
  3. Iconic and oversimplified drawings of creatures which are representations of inner psychological states.

I am also currently experimenting with color and texture to create abstract "landscapes" which are subtle manifestations of nature's ephemeral beauty as opposed to being direct depictions of natural space.
